« About TV Guide Channel

Anyone remember/miss " The Prevue Channel", TVGC's predecessor?

With all due respect, I didn't come here and post this thread to blindly bash TV Guide or it's channel. The "TV Guide Channel" does what it's supposed to do for the most part, and it also does what it has to do to remain profitable and keep viewers viewing. So please don't delete my thread!!!

I figure everyone knows as well as I do that in this age of digital cable and satellite, TV Guide Channel's usefulness as an electronic program guide (EPG) has decreased dramatically, hence why the program grids have long been de-emphasized in favor of programming. It happens to many a network/channel: they must ditch their original roots or purpose to stay alive and profitable. Sad but understandable.

With that said, growing up in the 1990's I was somewhat of an aficionado for the Prevue Guide (later Preview Channel), which is as weird as it sounds. Back in the '90's this channel (and the whole EPG channel idea) was quite useful and far from redundant.

But aside from that, I was fond of ol' Prevue because of it's charming, low-tech nature with the simple, uncluttered blue grids powered by Amiga computers, it's unobsttuctive programming previews and programming, and most importantly for me.............the infectious, easy-to-listen music during interstitials. Yes, I LIVED for that stuff and would often leave the channel on for hours in the background as I went about my house. I dunno if that was just a local thing here with Paragon (now Time Warner) Cable here in Manhattan, NYC or if the interstitials were a national thing, but I loved those little dittys and to this day am looking for a way to acquire them. Would anyone care to direct me to the source of those, perhaps some production music companies???

As we all know, TV Guide bought Prevue Networks in the late 1990's, and by early '99 the first incarnation of today's TV Guide Channel was born. The change was minuscule at first, but the channel soon spawned off from it's Prevue roots, for better or worse which is COMPLETELY understandable.

So, does anyone recall those days of the Prevue Channel ans would like to reminisce and discuss??? I'd really like to hear from other fans of it. Perhaps we could start our own group or something.........

I love the old channel. Easy to read, goes quickly through the listings, and isn't annoying at all. They should go back to that.

I'm not much of an afficienado, but I do remember (and MISS) it. I, too used to leave it on for background...something that is completely impossible to do with the contemporary tvguide channel. Unless your a "tween" and nothing is on mtv, I suppose.

Thanks to the poster for putting up the youtube links, they were fun to see after being tortured for so long.

I remember the Prevue Guide growing up..I'd watch it all the damn time. I still watch it when there's nothing on, but it's just not the same. Would I give anything to hear the classical 90's music of the Prevue Guide and the announcer saying "Welcome to tonight's TV lineup, this is Prevue Tonight." And for God sakes, does anyone miss the classic blue?

For what it's worth, let's start a petition..lol! Nothing against TV Guide Channel or anything but it would be cool.
