Episode Recap of Season 3 Finale: "No Rest for the Wicked"
I don’t know about you but I’m going to be thinking about that last shot the entire summer. I feel like I read an Eric Kripke interview where he said we weren’t going to see hell. But we got a glimpse of it. Oh my. Everyone was wondering whether Dean was going to actually die and go to hell. He did. I really felt that this season had to end this way. And poor Sammy – he was going to do anything he could to save his brother. Unfortunately, Dean didn’t let him. And speaking of Sam, Lilith couldn’t kill him. Have you wrapped your minds around that one yet? She couldn’t kill him. What does that mean? Just how powerful is Sammy? I had a feeling he was powerful, but Lilith’s mojo didn’t work on him. That kinda scares me for next season. The only thing I really wanted to see in this finale, but didn’t get was Sammy going dark side. But hmm…I guess we can look forward to that in Season 4, right?
I still have to process this finale so I’m not sure it outdid "Devil’s Trap," but it came close. This episode was creepy and suspenseful and funny and sad and just plain awesome. The brotherly moments were plentiful; it was a great way to close out what was such a weird season for so many reasons. The main reason being it was shortened by the writers’ strike. I did find "No Rest for the Wicked" difficult to watch at times. Here’s why:
• Stubborn Dean Winchester: I know it was his life on the line, but when Dean wouldn’t cave into Sam and Ruby, I just wanted to scream at him. I know he had good reasons, but I just wanted him to let his brother handle things. If Sam could use his abilities for something good, to save him, he should have let him. I get why he was so apprehensive about it, but I still wanted him to trust Sam to do his job and save Dean. Plus, the way he talked to Ruby and ended up punching her first, that was hard to watch. So was Ruby kicking Dean’s ass.
• Dean Winchester on the run: I always think of Dean as confronting everything head on. But in the beginning of "No Rest" – I know it was a dream – but watching him run from the hellhounds was just scary. To know he was scared enough to run was so sad.
• Dean’s death: I know I’m harping on Dean right now, but bear with me. Watching those hellhounds tear at him – that was beyond disturbing. To see one of the lead characters ripped to shreds like that is not something you see every week. To top it all off seeing him all tethered in hell ended things on the scariest possible note.
Let’s get to Sam. First of all, Jared Padalecki totally stepped up to the plate and knocked one out of the park with his performance. The pain was so evident on his face after he lost his brother. I really thought at that moment his eyes were going to turn black, his smile would transition into a sexy smirk and evil Sam would be back. It didn’t happen, but I’m still holding out hope for whenever the show returns.
Awesome Moments:
• There was Lilith’s “shore leave” with her new “family.” It was a different little girl playing her this time, but the results were still as creepy. I felt like I was watching an episode of the Twilight Zone. And that’s a huge complement. And later, as Ruby, she kissed Sam. After all, Lilith’s a destroyer of children and seducer of men. Wonder what’s going to happen between Lilith and Sam in Season 4.
• "Carry on Wayward Son" made a comeback – loved that they once again set the recap to what’s probably the show’s unofficial theme song. Every season finale should kick off with that song.
• And speaking of music: OMG. The Bon Jovi portion of the show was totally unexpected and totally rocked! I really wanted Sam to sing along with Dean and he did. That was just hilarious in so many ways, truly one of those scenes that instantly became a classic. However, that look on Dean’s face when he stopped singing "Wanted Dead or Alive" was crushing.
• Bobby supporting the boys was a thing of beauty, especially when he didn’t let the Winchesters go to Indiana on their own.
• Bobby rigging the sprinklers to spray holy water was inspired.
• How sad was it when Bobby got Dean to reveal he was having hallucinations. Sam seemed surprised by that. And the progression of it was scary. He saw Sam’s face turn hellhound like "Crossroad Blues." A few hours before deal time, and Dean could spot demons like the cop, or the neighbors. A few minutes before and he could even tell Ruby wasn’t really Ruby.
• Ruby called Sam out on his insecurities. He didn’t want to be different and he knew when Dean looked at him like he was a freak. I wish he had defied Dean and tried to tap into his abilities anyway. It’s funny how Sam never listened to BDW, but in the end, he listened to Dean.
• Jensen Ackles was nine kinds of awesome in this episode as well. From acting out Dean’s stubborn ways, his inappropriate humor, those crushing looks of despair and doom and Dean's death – the man can play it all.
Other thoughts:
• Where was Bobby while Sam and Dean were facing Ruby/Lilith?
• So glad to see that the Colt was gone for good (well, for now) and the boys had to rely on Ruby’s killer knife. I love that knife.
• The demon cop thought Dean’s last name was Hagar. As in Sammy "I Can’t Drive 55" Hagar…love it. (And oh yeah, he fronted Van Halen for a while too.)
• What did you think about Dean leaving Ruby stuck under that Devil’s Trap?
• Of course Dean would ask Sam to take care of his wheels.
• Sam almost had to kill a little girl. So glad he didn’t have to go through with it.
• Ruby/Lilith told Sam that it would take time to go all dark side. I wanted him to not listen to her and try anyway. After all, demons lie. I know, earlier Ruby said she never lies to Sam, but Sam has his own mind. I think he would’ve or at least should have tried.
• Part of me wanted Dean not to just scream "Sam" at the end, but "Sammy." That would have ripped my heart out even more.
•There were elements of "Devil’s Trap," "Salvation," "Crossroad Blues" and "Mystery Spot" in this episode.
• There were definite moments between the brothers but unfortunately no hug or "no love ya, bro" or anything like that. That's so not the Winchesters. Fortunately, Sam and Dean show they care in other ways.
• At what point did Lilith take over Ruby?
OK, this is going on way too long once again, so I’m going to continue with the favorite lines in the first post. I wanted to also tell you guys that after three seasons, this is my final column as the Supernatural blogger. I’m hanging up my keyboard and I’m going to become a civilian Supernatural fan once again. I just wanted to say I loved every second of writing this blog. You guys are the best posters – I’ve loved reading everyone’s wild theories, reports from conventions, and of course, your in depth analysis of each episode. Thanks for the good times and don’t worry, I’ll still be watching our show. Once again, congrats to Supernatural on getting the early nod on a Season 4. Looking forward to seeing how Dean gets out of hell (or wherever he is), whether Sam is going to realize his full potential and how in the world Mary Winchester fits into all of this. So what did you think of "No Rest for the Wicked?" What did you think of Season 3?

Favorite Lines:
"I don’t care what it takes Dean. You’re not going to go to hell. I’m not going to let you. I swear. Everything’s going to be OK."
"When that bitch breathes the air comes out crooked."
"Ain’t you just bringing down the room?" "Well it’s a gift."
"Sam, you’ve got some god-given talent. Well, not god-given but…"
"If you wanted you could wipe her [Lilith] off the map without moving a muscle." [Again, I knew Sam was going to be powerful, but more powerful than Lilith. I’m wondering how far they’re going to go with this next season]
"She probably wants you to become her antichrist superstar."
"All I’m saying is: Sam, you’re my weak spot. You are. And I’m yours."
"What we do for each other? How far we’ll go? They’re using it against us."
"We take this knife and we go after Lilith our way. The way dad taught us to. And if we go down, then we go down swinging."
"I think you should have totally been jamming "Eye of the Tiger" right there." "Oh, bite me. And I totally rehearsed that speech too."
"Do I look like a ditchable prom date to you?" (I love Bobby.)
"Family don’t end with blood, boy."
"Bon Jovi? Bon Jovi rocks…on occasion."
"I’m sorry, but this is all my fault, I know that. But what you’re doing? It’s not gonna save me. It’s only gonna kill you." (Awww, there goes Dean trying to make it so Sammy won't feel any guilt after Dean's gone)
"But what am I supposed to do?" "Keep fighting. Take care of my wheels. Sammy, remember what dad taught you, OK? And remember what I taught you." (Loved this monologue.)
"Your lips are soft."
"I don’t have to answer to puppy chow."
"Sic ‘em boys."
"Somebody help me. Sam. SAM!!!!!"

First of all, I will miss your blogs! Will someone else be blogging on SPN now? Second of all, I am on a yahoo list and I noticed that a lot of folks are assuming Dean was in hell in that final shot, but I have a different viewpoint. The camera zoomed in on his eye and then we saw Dean tethered to what looked like firing synapses of the brain. My theory is that we went into Dean's brain here and were shown where he is trapped. Kripke said a while ago that they weren't going to show hell because they don't have the budget to do it really well, so I take that to heart. I think Dean is trapped in a limbo of sorts and Sam will have to tap into his dormant powers (in Ruby's words) and bring Dean back. Then they just have to repair Dean's body because my biggest fear is having a fourth and possibly a fifth season with a spirit Dean - that would suck big time! I mean, I know the guys don't hug all that often, which is fine, but I would hate for Dean not to be corporeal - that would mean no touching at all, not even taps on the arm or whatever. That was the main reason I could never totally get into Quantum Leap - what good is having a main character get into jeopardy or hurt when the other one is a hologram and can't offer comfort? Ack.

cindyls, yeah, part of me is thinking that it's some kind of awful purgatory/limbo-type place and not hell. But I'm going to go with hell until they tell me different next season...lol

First off, Bettina you will be missed. I have been reading your blogs of the show for the past 3 seasons. Your enthusiasm and love for the show really shows through and is one of the reasons I make it a habit to read your thoughts on Supernatural. You will be missed.
Second...Bon Jovi. Singing loudly. Half of me is still in shock over that. Fell off my chair. How many shows on today can pull that off?
Third, why Lilith didn't kill Sam? There are some theories going around that Sam's power is the ability to negate demon powers. Lilith is fearful of him because he can actually kill her and any demon he wants. The ability to negate any demonic power is an awesome approach to having a different kind of power.
Fourth, the way Dean died. Wow. I think EK really wanted to get the fact across that he is dead. Same way as BDW died, the next episode Sam and Dean burned their fathers body, Dean is definitely dead. At least his body is.
Fifth, is that really hell? I read somewhere EK didn't want to do hell unless he could give it justice.
Sixth, what happened to Ruby? Maybe she got sent back to hell and can lead Dean out of hell. She got out once before when the Devils Gate was open perhaps she could do it again.
I can't wait until next season and hopefully without a writers strike we will have the full 22 episodes needed to give Supernatural justice.

Tina, you are all kinds of awesome...your absolute love for SN has come through every blog for the last three years...thanks for all your work...I'm sure it will be nice to enjoy the show as a regular fan now...
a few thoughts now that I've had time to sleep on it:
--How freakin' powerful is Sammy...the possibilities are almost a little scary to think about?
--I would have preferred a "Sammy!!" shout-out as well.
--Is Dean in hell or limbo? I HOPE it is hell...because well, the possibilities of hurt!Dean returning from hell? Happy sigh!
Thanks again Tina!!!!! I assure you, whoever takes over your blog will not do it justice!

Awesome season finale!!! Dean being attacked by the hellhounds killed me...it was so graphic & sad all at the same time. Yeah Lilith couldn't kill Sam...oh oh!!! Part of me really did want to see some of Psychic Sam come out. O well..I figure there is no way they can avoid that in Season 4 now tho. I was wondering where Bobby went too. The holy water thing was funny & the poor family being held hostage by Lilith!! All creepy & great!! Now I am stuck pondering all summer long till SPN returns. When I 1st saw Dean tho my 1st thought was Limbo cause I figured in Limbo you are trapped & can't go anywhere...and that since Kripke said he wouldn't do Hell unless he could do it justice, I believe him

Tina! I can't believe you're leaving us... Thank you so much for all of your fantastic blogs, for your love of the show that has captivated us so much, and for giving me a reason to get up on Friday mornings. You will be missed. And I hope that whoever takes over for you will do half as good of a job as you've done.
As this is gonna be the last post for several long months, I hope anyone who is scrolling through will indulge me a ramble... Because seriously, folks, that was probably one of the best episodes I've ever seen.
When the credits flashed up at the end, I had to stand up and pace in a tight little space because my heart was pounding and my hands were shaking. Literally shaking. *takes calming breath*
First?? Best. Previously's. Ever. Not ONLY did they use "Carry On My Wayward Son" -- which, as many have said, is sooo their theme -- they picked the best shots. The kind of shots that pumps you up so much you're literally humming. I had been sitting all leisurely thinking I'd wait through the previouslys, but I was curled into my Ball of Protection from the start because of that hit. Man. So. Awesome.
Dean's dream, running from nothing, seeing the Hellhound, running running running... man. So, desperate. So scared. When he wakes with a jerk, I took a breath. There was something about the colors and the clarity of this episode that made that boy more gorgeous than usual. His eyes were so green when he talked to Sam. His lashes just framed those eyes like a treasure map to a fantasy. I wanted to pause the shot of him looking up at his brother while hunched over the book with the Hellhoung picture and just stare. Just soak him up.
I loved the forced banter about a TJ run with 30 hours to go... Sam's "if we save you, let's still never do that..." Hee.
Here's where I fell more in love with Dean than I already was, if that is even possible. The instant Bobby reveals Lilith's locale, Sam's rearing to go; he turns in to Dean, Season 1. But Dean, big brother that he is, is all "holster it up there, Tex." Dean fighting both Sam and Bobby about Lilith wanting Sam's giant head on a pike and not wanting to make the same mistakes again had me biting my lip. He doesn't want to die -- doesn't want to go to Hell, but there is no way he was letting Sam give up his life -- or his soul, purposefully or inadvertently -- to save him. No way.
I love him for that.
Ruby shoves some pretty hefty reveals into the little basement arguement when Sam defies his brother and summons her anyway. Sam's visions/powers aren't "gone," they're "dormant." And while we've seen that he has death visions and was once able to move a dresser with his mind... we've not acutally seen the full extent of Sam's powers. What he's really capable of. Ruby says that one of those things are to kill Lilith. That he could save his brother by killing her and she never said anything before because Sam wouldn't go for it until he was desperate enough -- which makes me think that he would actually have to let go of his light a bit...embrace a certain level of darkness to unleash whatever power is inside of him.
She says something to Sam that caught me -- she says that she knows Sam hates how Dean looks at him sometimes, like he's a freak. I have never seen Dean look at Sam that way. I've seen him give him the standard "okay, you're so off your meds" look that brother's give each other. I've seen him look worried. I've seen him even look scared for Sam -- like in Sin City when Sam blew away Cassie and the preacher demon. But I've never seen him look at Sam like he was a full-on Freak. But that just goes to show what our filters do to us. Sam thinks that of himself, so when Dean shows worry, Sam sees disgust or fear.
How many times have we done that to ourselves? Put our own insecurities onto others, interpreted looks to mean what we think they mean... without asking the other. Human communication is a terrible and beautiful thing.
Ruby offers to be his Yoda and teach him the ways of the Force just as big brother pops down. And now I love Dean even more. He totally knew Sam wouldn't let it go and was ready for Ruby. More than ready. While watching Ruby kick Dean's ass was painful, his straightening up with that knife and showing her caught in the Devil's Trap was made of awesome.
I've always loved their gearing-up, getting weapons ready scenes. There is something so primal and sexy about that. But this weapons-ready moment led up to one fantastic conversation with Sam wanting to go find out from Ruby how he can use his powers to save Dean and Dean insisting that it wasn't going to happen.
He brought up the one thing that I had been afraid of -- another deal. Saying that Dad did it for him and he did it for Sam and enough already. He says that Sam doing what Ruby said is only going one place and wants to know why risk it... and Sam says "because you're my brother" and I want to hug him for that. And then... God, with the eyes. Dean turns those too-big eyes on Sam and says "you're my weak spot, and I'm yours"... *tears* They're family, but they have to stop being martyrs... stop "spreading it for the demons and do it the way Dad taught" them... go down swinging...
And just when the lump in my throat is getting downright painful, Sam pulls out the "you shoulda been jammin' to Eye of the Tiger" and Dean shuts him up with a "and I rehearsed that speech, too." LOVE it! So great, the timing. How they know just when to grab our hearts and just when to tickle our humor. It just feels so real.
But I can't help but feel that Dean's right -- even a little purposeful use of power could destroy the Sam that he knows, the Sam that he raised and cares for and depends on. His Sam. That's too much of a risk for Dean, even at the sake of his life. His sacrifice would mean nothing if Sam's soul is lost to darkness.
When the Impala doesn't start, I actually said "atta boy, Bobby" to the TV. Bobby had the best line ever. "Family doesn't end with blood." AWESOME.
I so wanted him to go with them. And he knew about the hallucinations, which, by the look on Sam's face, he'd obviously missed. Bobby knew that Dean was "playing wounded" (love that phrase) and he wasn't going to let them go alone. HOORAY!!
And THEN comes one of the best. scenes. EVER. For me, anyway. Sam tries for the sensitive "if this doesn't work, I just want you to know" chick flick, which Dean predictably deflects. And then, because he's our boy, he needs music. And what comes on the radio?? Bon Freakin' Jovi (who, despite what he said in BUABS, Dean thinks rocks, on occasion). "Wanted: Dead or Alive." OMG. I literally cheered. *dances in desk chair*
And THEN Dean starts singing. *swoon* Singing loud enough that he finally gets Sam into it. And BOY does Sam get into it!! It was fantastic. It was my friend and I on a roadtrip. It was my sisters and I on a summer evening in the old Jeep with the windows down and the radio up. It was a moment of just brothers -- just brothers... until the lyrics got to Dean and the look of pain in his eyes, sliding across his features was enough to steal the wind from me.
How he does that... how this actor does what he does with a mere shift of his eyes and no one but us notices... is amazing to me.
I love Dean's "How is that not crazy" when Bobby says that it makes sense that Dean can see demons. Since he's... yknow, almost "hell's bitch." OH! And then Dean breaks out some Peter Venkman ala Ghostbusters with his "Terrific plan; I'm excited to be a part of it." HA!! I cackled at that. Literally guffawed. Man, I love this show.
Y'know, I'm kinda glad we couldn't see the demon faces. Just Dean's reaction to seeing them was enough. He made me want to look away from their human faces.
Somehow Ruby gets out of the Devil's Trap. We don't get an explanation beyond what they don't know about her could fill a book. I'm not satisfied with that. I don't know if Ruby will be back, but if she is, I want to know how she can break a Devil's Trap when it's convenient for her -- or if she had help, like Cassie in Sin City with the preacher man. Dean's flinch when he sees her real face had me feeling apprehensive -- like that was supposed to mean something later. Which, turns out, I was right, but I didn't anticipate how it was going to come into play...
And then, our boy Bobby SO comes through with the Holy Water sprinklers. YES!! I think I even did a fist pump with that. Hee!! So awesome.
And then, what you heard echoing across the cosmos was the sound of hearts breaking wide open all over the world tonight. Because time ran out. And Sam wants Ruby to tell him what to do, and Dean says no. No, because Sam has to live. Sam has to survive. And Sam cries. And Dean, GOD Dean's eyes. They fill with tears that don't fall and pain of all he was going to miss and memories of all he'd once had and Sam sobs "what do I do" and Dean says "keep fighting...take care of my wheels...remember what Dad taught you... remember what I taught you..."
And the clock. Strikes. Midnight.
I swear I stopped breathing in that moment.
And then that scene as Lilith/Ruby opens the door and my heart stops. Just stops. Sam is screaming Dean's name, screaming for Lilith to stop... and Dean just SCREAMING as his leg is torn into, his shoulder, his chest... blood everywhere... trying to get away... OMG... I think I might have started panting for breath in that moment. It was every hurtDean moment I'd written, read, imagined... Dean's twisting in pain, bleeding, and then Ruby/Lilith does that whole Bright Light thing...
And nothing.
Sam is crumpled on the floor, but ala Harry Potter, the White Light of Doom does nothing to him. He... repels it. Is not consumed by it. *Gaelic ponders*
But despite the pain of that scene, the moment that gives me the oddest sense of hope yet was the shot through Dean's staring, green eye. An image of bloody Dean (in a gray T-shirt, no less... *Gaelic in love*) trapped in what appears to be the black webbing of his brain synapses... trapped and calling out for help -- for Sam.
*breathes*
So, now we're forced to wait... and wonder... and speculate... and hope.
Me? I think Sam's powers came to "light" in the last moment out of desperation, just like they did in Nightmare when he thought Max Miller was going to kill Dean. Seeing his brother ripped to shreds before his eyes, thinking Lilith was going to kill them... I don't know what he did or how, but I think he stopped her.
Either that, or he's always been immune to her and neither of them knew it. I also think that Dean's not Dead. Though he appeared so as Sam gathered him up, something happened when Lilith couldn't kill Sam. And then she ran away.
Kripke said in an interview "who says he goes to Hell?" So... I'm thinking Dean got stuck. He's not in "Hell" per se. He's in his own version of it, trapped inside his own body, in his own head, alone, without Sam, bleeding to death, but not dead yet. And while we were left in a similar situation at the end of Season 1 with the semi crash, the premiere of Season 2 was one of the best episodes... and I think the possibilities for Season 4 are boundless.
Saving Dean's life (rather than his soul), dealing with the fall-out of the experience of a year of facing death, exploring Sam's powers, figuring out what the brothers are to each other now, how much they depend on each other now, if there is an "each other" without them together, finding out the truth about Mary...
I just wish I knew where Bobby got off to there at the end... But I bet we see him enter the room in the premiere to find a bloody Dean held in his broken brother's arms. With the shell of Ruby laying next to them... DemonRuby far, far away... oh, what a mess.
Oh, what a fantastic, beautiful, thought-provoking, anticipatory mess.
Man, I love these boys. I can't wait for September.

Great recap, yet again. Thanks so much. I hope you stop by and comment on Season 4.
This episode was mostly made of awesome and put an uneven season 3 back to rights.
Fave parts: Dean and Ruby fight!
Bobby's 'family's more than blood' scene and the 'finding some other way' scene. I love that guy.
Loved the scene where Dean kills the CopDemon with the Knife. That demon-vision really comes in handy.
I didn't love the Lillith vacations torturing the family setup. How does the girl have time for vacation with Once-and-Future DemonKing Sam is still on the loose?
(Kripke - please make Lillith take over someone other than a little kid or Ruby's meatsuit next season.)
Loved that Sam and Dean both sang in the car to Bon Jovi. LOL.
Jensen Ackles nailed this episode hitting all the right notes. And Jared Padalecki with those puppy eyes watching Dean get ripped apart.
Dean!
Nice job that Sam didn't embrace the dark side or make a deal to save Dean. Nice call back to Nightmare with how Sam's power works. Sam's power came out as he watched Dean die.
Dean in hell!
Thank you Kripke for having the stones to send Dean to hell.
Sammy better dig up Frankendoc's book of weird science and get our boy on some ice over the summer.
Dean!

Thanks, Tina, for another AWESOME blog!!! I know I speak for everyone here when I say...YOU'LL BE MISSED!!!
The thought I had after seeing the final scene...a giant neuron...complete with electrical impulses. I think Dean's soul is trapped in a sort of purgatory. However, the hellhounds ripped Dean to shreds, so how will the writers find a way to realistically repair his body? Looking forward to next season!!!

Tina I have never left a comment before but I wanted to express how wonderful your recaps have been. It has been my favorite part of Friday mornings for a long time. I am not sure what was worse - Dean actually going to hell or finding out you are no longer going to be blogging this show. Thank you for every blog!

I wanted to also tell you guys that after three seasons, this is my final column as the Supernatural blogger. I’m hanging up my keyboard and I’m going to become a civilian Supernatural fan once again.
Tina, I'm sadded to read that you are not going to be doing this anymore, you had such intelligent thoughts and lovely opinions on the episodes. I look forward to your blog every Friday morning and it's going to seem strange not reading them. I loved them thanks for every blog.
Now that you are hanging up your keyboard is TV Guide getting a new blogger for the Supernatural recaps?

Awesome episode, and you're right Tina, it was disturbing to watch. I'm really sorry that you won't be blogging for us next year. My Friday highlight is going to read your blog. I'll miss you, so you'd better keep posting as a civilian!
Many people are wishing Sam had listened to Ruby - I'm glad he didn't. Face it, people. Ruby is a demon. She took shortcuts in life, and it led her to Hell. Her helping Sam take shortcuts with his power would most likely wind up with *him* in Hell (and therefor Dean, because no way he'd let Sam go). Also, it would totally negate Dean's sacrifice. So I'm really glad Dean stayed in character and stuck to his guns. Sam has the power - he needs to start taking an active role and learning to use it. *Sam* has to be pro-active, not looking under every nook and cranny, or waiting on Dean or Bobby or Ruby. Of course I don't want Dean in Hell, but I'm really hoping that Lilith's attempt and failure to kill Sam will jumpstart his brain and get him moving. Hunker down with Bobby, learn about your powers, own them and GET DEAN BACK!
Anyway, I just had to get that off my chest. I'm sure I'll have more thoughts, but I really feel the need to watch this one again before commenting. There was so much going on, so many wonderful, terrible moments. Kripke, you really are a magnificent bastard.

You guys are pretty easy to please. I felt a bit jipped. There were so many interesting things they could have done for the cliffhanger, like making Lilith's motive be to get Sam on the dark side rather than to want him dead, and having Sam agree to lead the war for the dark side in exchange for Dean's soul and have him assure Dean it's just to save him and he'll get out of it and having next season play out with him liking his new position a little too much. It also would have tied in perfectly with Mom Winchester's storyline and the YED/baby Sam connection. What is his greater purpose for the dark side? Lilith wouldn't have had that demon make the deal w/Dean if she just wanted Sam dead-he was already dead, hence the deal to bring him back.
And they should have had him fight the little girl, not Ruby. Way creepier. They underused her, and I would have preferred the continuity of using the same girl from the ploice station ep. And too bad they had to show hell on a budget, but what can you do. I hope they dig a little deeper next season. We knew Dean was going to hell-Kripke told us a few weeks ago that he wouldn't get out of the deal this season. You know he'll get out of the limbo b/c there's no show without him. So not such a big cliffhanger.
However, excellent performances by these two and the previously was the best yet.

I am glad Dean did not convince Sam to use his powers Yet.
I keep remembering what Poppa Winchester kept telling Dean about Hell wanting Sam because he is special. I think Dean finally realize just how important is for Hell not to get Sam. Unless Sam is strong enough to exert and use those powers for Good, everyone could be in a world of danger (especially if he is stronger than Lilith)Deans sacrifice would be in vain.
Hopefully Sam can now prepare himself with his power, and kick hell or purgatory's ass.
Bettina, you will certainly be missed. I loved your recapped.
