BSG: The (spoiler-warning) Bridge Theory
If you haven't yet seen the awesome mid-season finale episode of Battlestar Galactica, then you'll want to stop reading.

Honestly. Stop reading.
Last warning.
Still with me?
Ok, this is going to be short and simple. The theory is flying around fast and furious that the fleet landed at the ruins of the Brooklyn Bridge. I'm not so sure. Maybe, maybe not. Thanks to Galactica Sitrep who posted a side-by-side comparison shot of the ruins in the episode with a current pic of the Brooklyn Bridge.

I can see that there's a case to be made for this, but I'm not 100% convinced. I'm curious as to what other folks think. Is it intentionally ambiguous, or is it so obviously the Brooklyn Bridge that I should get my eyes checked for not seeing it???
Oh... I should also mention, just for the record, that I LOVED this episode. I can't believe that we have to wait until January 2009 to see what happens next.

Well, I haven't seen the episode, but based solely on the pictures, I don't think it's an obvious connection. The only thing you can say for sure is that it's a bridge, but not specifically which one!

I think it is purposefully ambiguous. I think you could make the case for it to be many other similar bridges in ruin. I don't have a picture with the same angle. But what about the London Bridge:

Funny, Cindy, I was thinking London Bridge also. Or maybe Sydney Harbor Bridge.

That is another good example, Famin. Again, wrong angle, but here is Sidney Harbor.

Ha! My first thought was OMG! That's the Brooklyn Bridge and that's Manhattan! Now, I grew up in NY the first 17 years of my life and haven't lived there for 34 years, but it was still my first thought. My family laughed at me saying of course I would think that, but apparantly I'm not the only one.
By the way, Rod, you are so right. That episode was GREAT! So much to take in and so much to ponder. Like where the heck is the last of the final five if not in the fleet or with the cylons and why would Deanna apologize when she saw it in her vision? So many questions, so much time to and speculate and discuss ad infinitum!

At this rate, isn't everyone a cylon?

I never thought about the Brooklyn Bridge but I did think that it was the ruins of the Temple of the Five which was described in several episodes!

You know what, Cindy, I think your picture is actually of Tower Bridge, not London Bridge. I get them mixed up too and then I remembered. If I'm remembering correctly, the Crown Jewels (stolen from India!) are in Tower Bridge.

I think you are right Famin, the river isn't big enough to be London Bridge. It isn't like I've actually seen it in person. But there are probably a hundred possibilities and if it were New York why wouldn't they show something really recognizable? That's why I think it was left so open. Ranger's theory is pretty interesting to me.

Rod, I just want to say thank you for being so clear about the spoiler alert. This is becoming a very big issue here at TVGuide.com, and on TV show blogs everywhere. Erring on the side of caution is always best, and much appreciated.
As for the picture, regardless of angle, the construction of both the London & Sydney bridges is all wrong for those ruins. Brooklyn is a distinct possibility, and is also a rather unique bridge. It is one of the earliest suspension bridges, and although it has been extensively upgraded, the original caissons (the part sunk into the river bed) are still there and are quite possibly unique in the world. I'd lay at least even odds that Brooklyn was the inspiration for the picture, whether or not they intend to say so in the storyline.

CindyA & Famin... thanks for the theories on the other possible bridges. I hadn't even considered that; I just got caught up in all the Brooklyn Bridge theories.
Kath... Like where the heck is the last of the final five if not in the fleet or with the cylons and why would Deanna apologize when she saw it in her vision?
These same questions have been driving me crazy! If the fifth wasn't in the fleet when Deanna was holding the Baseship hostage, does this mean that the fifth was already on the Baseship (implying that it's Roslin or Baltar -- yeah, Helo was on the ship too, but Deanna had nothing to apologize to Helo for whereas she had loads to apologize for to Laura or Gaius). Or does this mean that the fifth is "dead" already and that's why he/she wasn't with the fleet. Could it be Cally? Remember she told Doc Cottle that she hadn't been feeling well ever since the nebula (which was when the other four got "activated"). My mind can't stop racing with the possibilities. January is too far away!!!!
Ranger... I did think that it was the ruins of the Temple of the Five which was described in several episodes
I thought exactly the same thing, man. It was only on Saturday when I was reading some reviews that I first saw all these people talking about the Brooklyn Bridge.
Mostly... Thanks for popping in! No problem on the spoiler alert. I would hate to have spoiled that ending for anybody who hadn't yet seen the episode.

Wow. I have to say, those side by side comparisons look really close.
You'd think if they wanted to let us know for sure that it was New York, they would give something a little more distinct, but I guess having the Statue of Liberty buried in the sand has been kind of done before.
Still, I can't believe we have to wait so long to find out what happens next!

Not to be a party-pooper... but does it matter what bridge it was? I think the significance of the scene was to say "Earth kind of sucks now". I didn't think where they happened to be on Earth was important.
Overall I thought the episode was not the strongest of the season but still really good. I thought the cliffhanger wasn't very strong. To me, I never expected Earth to be a thriving planet. I didn't have any expectations about Earth at all. So to see it in ruins wasn't a big deal for me. And I don't see why it's a big deal for the characters. Surely they had to think it was possible that the planet was in ruins. What does it matter? Start over.

Well philly, I think that what matters is that Earth was the one thing that everyone including the Cylons were hoping and praying for. And to find it seemingly in ruins and maybe not even habitable would definitely be a blow to the psyche!
