M&Ms and Math-Who Knew?

OK, so in reading some of the blogs from the last couple of days, I was introduced to a new book that my kids haven't read, and they may be too old anyway. However, in reading notes on Amazon from one of the author's other books (Math Curse), this is in the examples:

If an M&M is about one centimeter long and the Mississippi River is about 4000 kilometers long, how many M&Ms would it take to measure the length of this river?
Question Mark

Anyone a math major out there? Bueller? 'Cause now I kinda want to know...

Well, there are 100,000 centimeters in a kilometer (1 meter = 100 centimeters and 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters, 100 X 1000 = 100,000) so 4000 kilometers = 400 million poor, defenseless M&M's that will get dirty and probably hot out in the sun of the Mississippi River.

They would indeed be dirty. There is a reason the Mississippi is called Old Muddy.

Kris - what a great book!

Yeah, I realized after I put it up (dumb Friday afternoon post-lunch brain needs more caffeine!) that the actual conversion from Kilometers to Centimeters was easy! In theory, if my girls haven't forgotten what they learned, they would be able to do it. But, since it referenced M&Ms, I had to post it!

Poor, wet, melty M&Ms!

I loved that question! They should make more questions using M&M's!

OK, so I vaguely remembered that they made a Cheerios book for math, but it turns out they have an M&Ms math book too! Two of them no less! Granted, it's not rocket science, but it's cool!

I wish the math I had to take was like that... mmm M&M stats....

indy-oh, to be a kid again! Although, my 5th grader was doing like 7th/8th grade math. Let me tell you, if she didn't have both the textbook and a website to reference, some of the topics were HARD! Pre-algebra! And I swear some of it was actual algebra. Polynomials? Hello! I didn't do any of that until high school!

I don't remember what those are! The worst are the ones you cannot solve, the answer is an equation.

I did french immersion so grade 6 and 7 math were in french. It was AWFUL!!!

UGH. Math IN French!

I can do this one! Okay, 100 cm = 1 m and 100 m = 1 km. So the answer is 4,000 X 10,000 = 40,000,000.

Am I right?

Stinky Cheese Man was my sons favorite book when he was little. Right up there with Captain Underpants - or was he in Stinky Cheese Man? I forget!

Wait. I think I forgot a zero. I think Mannie's answer is more right!
